D cheeked bits are similar to an eggbutt, but the cheek is straight to help prevent the bit sliding through the mouth and to give pressure slightly on the sides of the horses mouth.

Pelham Bits
There are three areas where pressure can be applied - the corners of the mouth, pressure points on the nose, and the lower jaw below the bit. Pelham bits work on two of these areas - The corners of the mouth through the tongue, bars, and side bars of the mouth, with the snaffle rein; or the lower jaw through a leverage system with the curb chain and side cheeks of the bit.
Snaffle Bits
This range of bits work directly on a horse's mouth without leverage or pully-action. Acting on the tongue, bars, and sides of the bars of the mouth. The degree of severity varies, depending on the thickness of the bit. The thicker the bit , the gentler the action in the mouth.
